Trefoil Guild Christmas Lunch at Putteridgebury December 2012 Bedfordshire Trefoil Guilds Hautbois Holiday 2011 Click to see the Photo Gallery Woburn District Trefoil Guild News "Girlguiding opportunities last forever - 91 year old Angela walks the cat walk!" Our Guild organised a Charity Fashion Show in aid of Willen Hospice. At our 2011 programme planning meeting we decided to run our annual charity event in June. At the meeting we met Shirley, who is the sister of Eileen, who was over on holiday from New Zealand. Someone complimented her on her clothes and when she said they had all come from charity shops in New Zealand this sparked off the idea to hold a charity fashion show and after some further enthusiastic brain storming a plan was hatched. We presented our ideas to the rest of the guild who were equally enthusiastic about it. We then asked for volunteers to be models, hands did not go up, until our eldest member, Angela, said she would, others thought, well if she will so will I. We ended up with 12 models and planned that they would wear two outfits each. Willen Hospice was contacted and was enthusiastic to support the fashion show which resulted in Gill, Jan, Sheila and I going on several occasions to their collection depot to sort and select suitable garments for our models and also clothing suitable to sell on a sales rail. Invitations to the show were sent out to all the Bedfordshire Trefoil Guilds and it was also posted on the Girguiding website. On the day all of the models were nervous but paraded very well and looked extremely glamorous. We were pleased that Joan was able to model the Jacques Vert number as she had only recently had an operation. Our 12 models paraded in outfits for different occasions. I think it helped that one of our member's maiden name was Shrimpton! There was a lot of noise going on in the changing room but Ann kept us all in order and helped with dressing.
Patricia ended the show in a pale mauve silk 'number' which had been donated by a store. It had an original price tag of £700 and consisted of a long skirt, a tight basque with a jacket, and these were complimented with a cheeky hat of her own. To the tune of "Hey Big Spender" Patricia took off the jacket, twirled it around her and everyone cheered.
This was followed by a big round of applause then tea and cakes - of course! With the help of one of our members' enthusiastic neighbours, who are volunteers at the Willen Hospice collection depot, the clothes that had been modelled and some from the sales rails were sold. Fun was had by all and £275 was raised for the Hospice. It just goes to show that you are never too old to enjoy new challenges. We hope you enjoy your Girlguiding as much as we do, however old you are! Jan Griffin Woburn District Trefoil Guild Chair Bedfordshire

OUR CHALLENGE Our Woburn Trefoil Guild invited Milton Keynes Trefoil Guild for a boat trip on the canal. It was a sunny afternoon spent in friendly chat accompanied by strawberry and cream tea. In conversation some of my Guild was asked if we would like to try Handbell ringing, with an emphatic 'YES' our challenge was hatched. Following the 10 week introductory course we gained our certificate. It was difficult, but enjoyable. What
future now? Eileen offered her house for practice and arranged for
us to temporarily use the Girlguiding Hand chimes, whilst Milton Keynes
kindly loaned us their music books and stands, meanwhile, Joy discovered
her church possessed old Handbells we could borrow, sadly they were
rather ancient and difficult to play. Serious
discussion followed on how to raise funds to purchase our own handbells.
Fortune smiled on us as Pat knew a contact from 'Grassroots Grants'
who could gift the necessary funds under certain conditions if we
met their criteria with an application deadline of three weeks. To
say the least, the forms required were daunting and required to know
the business like costing and benefits to the community we could provide.
Perseverance prevailed and Gill and Pat completed the application
with a day to spare. To our jubilation the grant was approved within two days of application; celebration, soft drinks and cakes all round as is the want of TREFOIL members; our own Handbell Group was born thanks to 'Grassroots Grants'. We are now registered as 'Woburn Trefoil Guild Ringers' with the Handbell Ringers of Great Britain. The
group has now swelled to nine including the four original members
who completed the introductory course. We practice regularly and to
date have played to audiences at two church functions, Brownie and
Rainbow groups as well as the annual Bell-Fest -a festival of Handbell
ringing from teams in our area. Unfortunately severe weather prevented
us from playing at Christ the Corner Stone, in Milton Keynes last
December. Gillian
