BECOMING AN ADULT LEADER.

Without the huge number of adults who get involved with Guiding in Bedfordshire, we would not be able to offer as many opportunities as we do for girls and young women across the County.

Adults get involved with us in a variety of ways –

* Running courses for the girls. The list of different skills the girls would like to learn is endless - first aid, chess, computing, cake decorating, cooking, canoing, abseiling, juggling… in fact, think of a skill and we could use it!

* Testing badges

* Giving specialist support to units and areas – help with accounts, marketing, secretarial work…

* Helping run units

* Training to be a Guider

We have a role in Guiding for almost everyone – whether you are 18 or 88 a woman or a man, whether you can spend an hour a week or more.

All we ask is that you are committed to our philosophy of working for the benefit of girls and young women in Bedfordshire,that we can obtain a reference for you and that you are willing to be police-checked

If you meet our requirements, in return, we can offer:

* training and the chance to gain formal qualifications. A Mentor to Help you.

* experience of working with girls and young people

* the chance to try out new ideas and approaches

* a place to meet new people and make new friends

* a lot of fun!!

" I felt something was missing from my life so I volunteered to become a Guider."

" After a 16 year gap whilst I went to university and pursued my career I decided it was time to give something back to the community. So I volunteered to help with the Guide Association."

" To me Guiding is part of my life, a way of life. I enjoy providing activities to encourage Brownies to think for themselves, to develop self-esteem and respect for each other. Guiding is a vocation – a commitment to an ideal. I hope to give back to the Brownies the happiness I got from my Brown Owl and the confidence in my own abilities."

" It’s fun! The girls often teach me as much as I teach them."

" The best thing about Guiding is being able to give the girls some of the opportunities I had to try things when I was a guide."

" The feeling of belonging is the best thing about Guiding. A feeling that you know other Guiders even if you have never met them – a common interest with women all over the world."

" Being with young people helps me keep in touch with how society works for the youth of today."

" Best of all is the satisfaction of seeing the girls grow into young women who have, with your help, become reliable, honest and trustworthy."

" I feel part of an organisation that offers a guiding hand for young people."

" The best thing is the satisfaction of offering girls opportunities they might not otherwise have had."

" Smiles, fun, food , camp."

" I love camp and pack holiday – even when you are soaked or bitten to death by bugs."

" I love being able to go anywhere in the world and find a friend."

" It’s a total change from work and the normal routine of life – and it’s fun!!
