Division Mollivers
Bunkhouse opening Sun 16 May 2010 The official opening of the bunkhouse extension took place in the afternoon, 19 years to the day after the original Mollivers building was opened. Sophie Ben Taieb, a Ranger and Young Leader in Bedford Division, who played a major part in securing funding for the extension cut the ribbon. Then everyone enjoyed tea and cake before making their way home. 'It was sun sun sun and fun fun fun' enthused one excited Brownie!
17th Bedford Guides take action in a major local and global community project. Demonstrating the true meaning of girls in the lead, Priory Guides from Bedford pledged to join 500,000 girls across the UK in taking the Girlguiding UK: Changing the World challenge. Changing the World is an ambitious UK-wide community action project, involving 19 partner charities, which all Girlguiding UK's members are invited to get involved in. The Girlguiding UK members, from 17th Bedford (Priory) Guides chose to undertake the Asthma UK project and learnt about the condition, its triggers and potentially life-saving ways to help a person who is having an attack. The money raised will help send children whose lives are affected by severe asthma on a Kick Asthma holiday. Children with severe asthma may sometimes miss school or have to be admitted to hospital and Kick Asthma holidays can help them to gain confidence and learn how to manage their condition better. The group of 25 girls, all aged between 10-14 years old baked gluten free cakes and swam over 200 lengths of Robinson pool to raise £467.17 - raising the most money for Asthma UK nationally as part of Changing the World. The girls will be making a presentation to the charity at a Guiding Celebration on July 9th, alongside the Rainbows and Brownies, who have also been working hard to raise money for Changing the World charities. Assistant Leader, Kate Davies said, 'The girls really made a tremendous effort to collect sponsors and swim as many lengths as they could. We couldn't believe how much money had been pledged in sponsorship to each of the Guides, and terrific to find out we had collected the most nationally. The girls are really looking forward to presenting the cheque to Asthma UK.' Neil Churchill, Chief Executive Asthma UK said, 'Asthma UK is delighted to be working with Girlguiding UK to change the world for the one in ten children who have asthma in the UK. By taking part, girls can gain potentially life-saving knowledge of how to help someone having an asthma attack and help to break down some of the barriers that prevent young people with asthma from achieving their potential.' In September 2009 Girlguiding UK launches its Centenary celebrations and in the run up to this landmark event, the Changing the World project will show the positive force that guiding has in local communities and across the world.
