Brownie Adventure

Brownie Adventure

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BROWNIES

A girl can become a Brownie Guide any time after her seventh birthday and she will normally stay until she is ten or eleven.

Brownie units take up to 24 girls and the ratio of adults to girls is one to eight.

" Over 50% of women born in the UK have been Brownies when they were younger"

Brownies can choose what to wear from a selection of different parts of uniform – tee-shirts, polo shirts, sweatshirts, culottes or pants. They do a range of activities working on their own or in groups and can choose to work towards a vast selection of interest badges from athlete or artist, chess or first aid to writer or book lover, knotter or knitter.

The Brownie Adventure introduces challenges that are worked on during Brownie meetings. The adventure areas are "You", "Community" and "World" and are delivered in three areas "Arts", "Out of Doors" and "Community Action".

During her adventure challenges a Brownie may be awarded with a certificate or sticker, either as encouragement or for her achievement.

Brownies, are encouraged to make their own decisions about things and plan their programme, a theme that is carried on into Guides and beyond.

" One of my Brownies had heard about the Blue Peter appeal and sent off for a fundraising pack. She talked to us about doing a Bring and Buy sale and we thought it would be a good idea. The girls planned what they were going to do, publicised the event and ran the stalls on the night. Altogether we raised about £120 for Blue Peter"

Volunteers are always needed to get involved in the Brownie programme – giving demonstrations and testing badges as well as helping to run the unit itself.
