Thinking of others We Think of Others

Active Citizenship. That is what we encourage in guiding. Helping the girls to realise that they are part of a wider community and that what they do matters.

One of the ways in which we can give practical help to others is through our many fund raising activities around the county. A few examples of what we did this year are:

  • Woodside Brownies gave an Around the World Concert to raise money for the local Hospice.
  • Biggleswade District raised money for Comic Relief by eating doughnuts without using their hands (A messy business!)
  • Henlow District had a sponsored walk to raise money for Keech Cottage children's Hospice.
  • 103 Girls and Guiders from Luton South Division Bag - Packed in a supermarket in Luton to raise money for the Guide Friendship Fund.
  • Lewsey Farm District held a fundraising evening with side shows including a human fruit machine!

Active Citizenship in Guiding extends beyond fundraising. It also includes giving the girls a better understanding of the world we live in and the difference they can make.

In 2001:

  • Leighton Buzzard Brownies went litter picking on the narrow gauge railway.
  • In Bedford Division 500 girls were part of the procession to turn on the Christmas Lights.
  • Some of the older girls in Bedfordshire also became Millennium Volunteers in 2001 - Demonstrating their commitment to the local community in which we live and Guide.
