Haverings Opening

Haverings Opening 1970

History

In 1969 Mr Leslie B. Sell offered the Luton Division Guides an 8-acre site off Handcross Road as a Guide Training Centre. The ground was a remnant of Slaughter's Wood and part of the land of the manor of Haverings. The ground was offered to the Guides on a 99-year lease, and a rental of an annual bunch of roses for the wife of the Chairman of the Leslie Sell Youth Trust. The land was gratefully accepted, and plans were quickly made to raise funds for a brick-built training centre and five camp sites, each with water and drainage.

As Slaughter's Wood is a protected area, site clearance and the removal of trees required careful supervision, paying particular attention to the preservation of a number of hornbeams. Building began on 5th May 1970 and cost £10,000. The Guides raised another £10,000 for equipment. All was paid for by 19th September 1970 when the Centre was officially opened by Lady Patience Baden-Powell, accompanied by her husband Robert, grandson of the founders of the Scout and Guide Movement, Olave and Robert Baden-Powell. In keeping with its historic origins the Centre is known as 'Haverings'.
On the 25th Anniversary of the opening of Haverings Mrs Marjorie Ekins planted a commemorative tree in the grounds.
