Highlights of 2000

Highlights

  • 15 Girls and young women in the County were awarded their Duke of Edinburgh's Award - 5 Bronze, 4 Silver and 5 Gold
  • 36 Guides were awarded their Baden Powel Trefoil Badge. This award is made following completion of a broad range of Guiding challenges
  • One young Guider, Katherine Anderson, achieved her Queen's Guide Award - one of the Guide Association's most prestigious awards. This recognises the hard work and service carried out by the individual
  • One Guide, Joanne Jordan, from the 1st Little Straughton Guides in North Bedfordshire won the Guide Section in Guiding magazine's Safety in the Home competition
  • Four young women were chosen to represent Bedfordshire overseas - in Ukraine, Russia, Sweden and Australia.
  • A Guide Patrol in the 1st Sundon Unit in Luton was joint runner up in Going for Gold - a Guide Association competition run across the whole of the Anglia Region. As part of their prize, the guides helped to make a training video on the new Guiding Programme
  • The 2nd Goldington Brownie Pack was runner up in the Millennium Blake Shield - an environmental competition run by the British Naturalists' Association
  • The 2nd Stopsley Guide Company in Luton represented the County at the Trooping of the Colour Ceremony in London
  • STOMP - Our activity day to celebrate the Millennium. Over 1800 girls and women of all ages joined in the celebrations
  • Bedfordshire's Backwoods Day in May - an outdoor activities day organised for 200 girls and women
  • Members were involved in fundraising and awareness-raising activities ranging from a sponsored sleepover for Children in Need and a bazaar for Hearing Dogs for the Deaf to a sponsored silence to raise money for the neonatal unit at Bedford hospital
  • The introduction of a County-wide mentoring scheme to support our new leaders. So far we have recruited and trained 15 mentors in the county who are ready to be placed with trainee leaders
  • The creation of a groundbreaking new strategy for membership development to ensure that as many people as possible get to hear about the impact if Guiding in Bedfordshire
  • 46 Adult leaders received long service awards. 31 - 10 years, 9 - 20 years, 5 - 30 years and 1 - 40 years
