Guide and Young Leader from South Beds join the Orchestra - The NSGSO
2011 - The National Scout and Guide Symphony Orchestra
A report from Kat Wallace from
Linleighbridge District Guides and Emily Lakin from Leighton Heath
District on their adventure with the orchestra. Kat says: "I first heard the orchestra play at Centenary Camp, then my leader mentioned it again at the start of the Autumn term. I was told that a Young Leader Emily Lakin, who used to be a Guide in our unit was also in the orchestra and so when the application forms came out later in the year I decided to apply for a place. To apply we had to complete an application form telling the NSGSO our music grade, what instrument we played and it had to include a letter of recommendation from our instrumental teacher. I was accepted and on Sunday 31st July, Emily and I went to Bearwood College, a boarding school, near Workingham. I played the violin and Emily played flute. Daily rehearsals started at 9am and finished at 9pm, but we had breaks and two hours free time in the middle of the day to do whatever we wanted. I think the best bit was the Ceilidh as I'd never really done any Scottish dancing before and was really fun." Emily says: "We were taught to play The Academic Overture by Brahams, The Walk to the Paradise Garden by Delius, Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 by Elgar, The Great Adventure by Newton and Symphony No.2 in B Minor by Borodin. On the Friday we performed at St Nicolas Church in Newbury to invited guests and on the Saturday at Bearwood College Theatre in Wokingham to our families and more special guests." 'Apart from the concerts, the after show concert would have to be the best bit. It is a miniature concert which the members of the orchestra put on for entertainment of the other members. This year the woodwind section performed a recorder piece, a trumpet player sang an original song, the percussion section did a "cup" trick, the cello section did their own version of Bohemian Rhapsody and five people from different sections did a short play of Cinderella. There were 66 people taking part this year including 26 new members from all over the UK including Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and the Isle of Man.
